Landmine Awareness Poster

Introduction

Introduction Image 1

The UN global issues campaign was a project that aims to create a compelling and impactful series of posters to raise awareness of global issues that are of key importance for the UN. These poster will serve as a visual tool to educate and engage viewers on the dangers posed by various global issues from the local level to the international level. This particular poster was designed to bring awareness to landmines and their effects, emphasizing the importance of landmine awareness and prevention as well as incorporating sobering statistics to drive home the impact of these weapons on people all over the world.

Initial designs

Step 1: Art Style

After looking at the very sterile poster designs that he UN generally uses it was decided that the best way to truly bring more of a focus on the impact of landmines was to incorporate hand drawn elements into the poster along with using symbolic imagery to convey the seriousness of what people across the planet have to contend with when landmines are forgotten about.

Step 2: Palette

The next step was to establish a color palette that would be used throughout for the poster. Taking inspiration from the landmine signs commonly found across the globe and expanding upon the with an extra color allowed a monocromatic poster than uses deep reds typical of danger signs and warnings to convey the seriousness of the image.

Iconography

The iconography consisted of creating replicas of the various elements that would be included in the poster in the same art style in order to bring cohesion to the poster. You can see in the images to the right how regular photos were transformed into a consistent art style for use in the final poster.

Final Poster

As seen in the final poster there is a cohesive element of time and danger as displayed through the hourglass and use of landmines as sand with the universal signage for landmines being used for the top of the hour glass as well as the area to display information for the poster such as its title and the day of event in question. The text found of the poster features messages from the UN such as “every 7 minutes someone accidentally steps on a forgotten landmine’ and the UN campaign slogan of “help us achieve safe steps, safe ground and safe homes”.
